Cool Text Editor with massive capabilities
« on: October 18, 2007, 04:24:31 PM »
I tend to write in multiple environments, and I didn't want separate apps for each.  I looked for something I could use that would provide me more flexibility than Notepad, but didn't have a huge footprint on my system resources.  I tried EMACS, which I did use for a while, but I found I had to think too much ;).  I finally settled on a product called EditPlus2.  It is similar to Notepad, but had additional functionality that I use often.  For example, it has a pretty darn good find-replace feature, as well the ability to utilize pre-defined templates for multiple languages or define your own.  One of the coolest features is the ability to record macros.  It's cheap too!

Check it out:  at http://www.editplus.com/.

And no, I am not affiliated with these guys in anyway.  Just think its a cool product!

I actually use UltraEdit-32 (http://www.ultraedit.com) for most of my coding.  It's rock solid, feature-rich, and is regularly updated.  I probably use only about 10% of its features!

There's a lot of great editors out there; one of my favorites is jEdit (http://www.jedit.org); as editors go it's dog slow but it has one of the finest code diff plugins I've ever seen.

vi or die (well, vim, but close enough):

http://www.vim.org/download.php

It's free and cross platform.

Interesting how things change as time passes.  I'm now a die-hard EditPlus fan, though this latest release doesn't seem to be quite as peppy as earlier incarnations. Notepad++ is still the peppiest editor as far as I have seen but it still has that goofy issue with the File Open feature always opening in the wrong directory (when multiple documents are open).  UE is finally coming back around to being a little more snappy, after going through several iterations where the editor got so slow it was barely usable.

Lots of good choices in the market right now, and free is a very good price when you can find it!
