Speed up system
« on: April 08, 2022, 11:18:19 AM »
Any ideas for speeding up the Prelude system???
I could use some ideas.
Things that come to mind...
1.  Resizing of files
2.  removing (warehousing) old data off line
3.  indexing files if necessary
4.  fresh re-generating indexes
5.  speed of hardware
6.  scheduling large reports for nightly processing and not day time
7.  cloud computing for reliability and updates
8.  Avalara for tax updates/reporting/updates
9.  Latest software updates
10.  EDI for many transactions
11.  Bar code scanning to eliminate many entries

I could use some more ideas.

1.  Resizing of files
Always important to keep up with file sizes. We resize on a monthly basis to make sure files are in tip-top shape

2.  removing (warehousing) old data off line
For our purposes, we keep 3-4 years of order history data on-line only. The order history line file can get unmanagable in a hurry, so limiting the number of records can make a big difference, especially for end of month reporting.

3.  indexing files if necessary
With the improved hardware, we have not found as many benifits in indexing, and in some cases have noticed slowdowns associated with too many indexes.

4.  fresh re-generating indexes

5.  speed of hardware
Hardware and disc type can make a big difference. If you are on an old AIX system with physical spinning. discs, then your database performance will always be slow, and there isn't much to get around that. On a modern Linux based server with solid-state storage the speed is significantly faster, especially for queryies against large record sets.

6.  scheduling large reports for nightly processing and not day time
this can make a difference, and is also good for providing regular updates to key people.

7.  cloud computing for reliability and updates
Would love to find out more about this

8.  Avalara for tax updates/reporting/updates
We use Avalara. i wouldn't exactly call it a speed improvement. But it does outsource a critical function to a more specialized service that, frankly, does a better job than the existing modules. So its a win.

9.  Latest software updates
Newer versions of unidata have some neat features, including the ability to use type 3 64 bit files for data, which eliminates the need for dynamic files.

10.  EDI for many transactions
Can help, but EDI frequently costs to setup, and can entail a lot of hidden development expenses. Our larger transactors are connected with EDI, but only after we have done a cost benefit analysis.

11.  Bar code scanning to eliminate many entries
Yes... barcodes are your friend. Especially for warehousing, where employees might have handheld scanners. Commands can even be encoded with the "slash" in front, simplifying processes for people on handhelds.

--Also--
REStfull services can add functionality without taxing your main business application. We currently use Certify for expense processing, purchase shipping through a 3PL's LTL api as well as directly from Amazon for parcel fulfillment. There is development costs for setting these up, but sometimes the improved features and/or interface make this worth it.
